Cologne is situated on the river Rhine, it’s the largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia and the fourth largest city in Germany. The towering Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Mary, Kölner Dom, on the banks of the Rhine is Cologne’s most impressive landmark. This masterpiece of High Gothic architecture is third in the list of the highest churches in the world and included in the list of world cultural heritage UNESCO.
Construction of the Cathedral was begun in 1248 and was the most ambitious building project of the Middle Ages.
Construction lasted 632 years and was completed only in 1880. After completion 157-meter-high Cologne Cathedral became the highest building in the world for 4 years.
