National Park High Tatras (Vysoke Tatry) is situated in the north of Slovakia, shared partly with Poland. The only mountains of Alpine type in the whole Carpathian Mountain range are often called «the smallest alpine mountains in Europe».
These mountains are full of breathtaking mountain lakes. Every mountain lake in the High Tatras is called “pleso”. Pleso is a tarn created either by the melted glacier or by the rain water. In Slovakia, plesá (pl. from pleso) are located mostly in the High Tatras and they are characterized by their circle shape.
Our travel in Tatras starts from main station Poprad-Tatry. Poprad — the gateway to High Tatras.
The Poprad city is the most important economic, cultural and tourist centres of the Spis region. You can find a lot of great accommodation facilities here and also a popular thermal aquapark AquaCity Poprad. From Poprad we went to Štrbské pleso.
Štrbské pleso is known by many as the symbol of the High Tatras. It is a favorite ski, tourist, and health resort in High Tatras. I consider this tarn to be one the busiest spot in the mountains. The tarn is surrounded by a walking path which doesn’t require much physical stamina and every square centimeter of the path is accompanied by the beautiful lake view. It’s Štrbské pleso is a glacial mountain lake, is a beautiful attraction. You also will find a lot of hotels there, cute little folk restaurants, a trolley and rack railway and lots of space to park.
Our second lake called Popradské pleso. Both lakes give a beautiful scenery of High Tatras. Popradské pleso is about 2 hours walking from Štrbské pleso. Near to the Popradské pleso there is a symbolic cemetery as a memorial devoted to people who worked and tragically died in the High Tatras.
Batizovské pleso is within 3 hours walking from Popradské pleso.
